Day 7

Today marked the start of the second week of Senior Project. I spent last week in more of an observational role, only presenting to the class a handful of times, but at the end of this week, I will be teaching for a class block. I’m looking forward to this challenge, as while Ben is helping to guide me I’m responsible for creating the lesson plan and teaching the class. I started my day today by shadowing Ben during the first block of the day, G block. This was an in-class work day for students to work on their podcasts, so while they worked on those I talked with Ben and outlined my plan for the coming week. I’ll probably spend most of my time out of class working on my lesson plan, as that's kind of the keystone of my whole project. To that end, I spent about 3 hours working on my lesson plan, mainly coming up with alternate topics. That was from around 12:30 to 3:30.

  05/11/2023 - 3:45 I spent today working alone, as my project mentor led a hike for Earth Day. One thing I did was look for two videos about the three shots conspiracy in connection with the assassination of JFK, as Ben asked me to do that so he could help reinforce the classes understanding by showing said videos to them. I also worked on my lesson plan and decided that the topic I will be teaching a class on will be 9/11. The classes I’ve been sitting in have been working on a podcast about conspiracy theories, so the lesson will be about whether or not the US government was responsible for 9/11. I spent a while developing my lesson plan and got to a point where I have a rough structure of how the class will go but I need to talk to my mentor to get his opinion before I move forward. I also read some more of Evolving Education today, I’m now through Chapter 3 of the book. I spent around 4 and a half hours working today, from 9:15 to 11:30 and from 12:45 to 3. Day 8

  05/16/2023 - 8:00 I started my day today by reading Chapters 4 and 5 of Evolving Education . Chapter 4 was about redefining what success looks like to students; Switching from measuring success through standardized tests and grades to measuring success individually with each student. I think this is a crucial part of education, as if students don’t feel like they belong where they are they won’t learn nearly as well. Chapter 5 was about the 10 Principles of Learning Science, which are prett much common sense to me. Things like providing a safe environment for students both physically and mentally, indiviually working with each student to better take advantage of their strengths and weaknesses, and learning is a process that is full of mistakes and lessons. Weekly Reflection 1

  Weekly Reflection 1 (05/14/2023): So far I am enjoying Senior Project, and I think I’m learning a lot as well. This week I’ve spent an hour or two every day shadowing Ben Bartoldus during his US History classes, and while watching him I’ve learned a lot about teaching. I’ve observed him lead students to the right answer instead of just giving it to them, have conversations with students that form connections, and motivate students to work by helping them realize their individual strengths and weaknesses. The second half of my day is normally independent work, things like writing mock official notes and reading a text Ben gave me, Evolving Education , by Dr. Katie Martin. I’ve also done a little bit of grading (which I enjoyed), and some research for Ben, things like finding Youtube videos that support the current curriculum topic.
